Asia/Pacific
The Asia / Pacific coffee region includes the Indonesian archipelago, East Timor, South Asia and Papua New Guinea.
This large area includes a variety of climates, topographies and coffee qualities. Some of the world’s most distinctive coffees are found here. With the exception of the washed coffees from Papua New Guinea and East Timor, most coffees Starbucks buys from the region are processed using the “semi-washed” method.
For semi-washed coffees, ripe cherries are washed and de-pulped using small hand-pulping machines. Once the fruit is removed, the coffee is washed, then laid out to dry in the sun. After the coffee has partially dried (to 25%–40% moisture), the parchment skin is removed and the green coffee is laid out again for a final drying. Once completely dried, the green coffee is sorted and graded.
The full-bodied character and spiciness of coffees from Sumatra and Sulawesi, and the herbal aromas and depth of coffees from Papua New Guinea, have made these coffees partner favourites. Asia / Pacific coffees provide weight, depth and dimension to many of our signature coffee blends such as Starbucks® Christmas Blend.
